In today’s world, the average person consumes about 34 gigabytes of information daily, which is the equivalent of reading a 300-page book every single day. This overwhelming volume of content, combined with our increasing dependence on technology, significantly affects how we think. As a result, our ability to think critically is under serious threat.
Many of us struggle to remain present, which makes it difficult to assess what truly matters. This is a problem because our brain's processing power is limited. There is only so much information we can effectively handle before mental fatigue sets in. Without filtering and prioritising what deserves our attention, we risk being overwhelmed by a never-ending flood of information, leading to misinterpretation, misinformation, and decision fatigue.
Beyond the cognitive overload, our overreliance on technology is also impacting the fundamental skills that define our humanity. As historian Yuval Noah Harari points out, automation is making human skills like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration more valuable than ever. Ironically, while technology simplifies many tasks, it also threatens to erode these very skills.
Does this mean we should reject technological progress? Absolutely not. Technology can be a powerful tool, making information more accessible than ever. However, it also tempts us to outsource our thinking. Without intentional effort, we risk becoming passive consumers rather than engaged, critical participants in shaping the future. We must recognise that although technology is beneficial, it should not come at the cost of our ability to think independently and critically. The consequences are already visible. Misinformation in health, politics, and science is actively shaping public opinion and decision-making. The ability to evaluate sources, verify facts, and reason clearly is what protects both individuals and society from manipulation.

In a century where the volume of information will only continue to increase, and where AI-generated content is becoming indistinguishable from that created by humans, our ability to assess information for accuracy, credibility, and bias is more important than ever. How we engage with information today doesn’t just shape our future; it determines our success. The choices we make, and the way we think, communicate, and collaborate, all influence our lives and the society we’re building. In a world defined by rapid technological change, these skills are not optional, they are essential. Without them, we risk losing our competitive edge, missing opportunities, and falling behind.
Now is the time to invest in yourself and your future. In a world overflowing with technology, prioritising critical thinking ensures you won’t just keep up with the future - you’ll stay ahead of it.
